BEE in 1957. MS in mathematics in 1959: I learned about being a
husband, about being the father of a baby boy and about supporting
a family on the pay of a TA. Fidel Castro, Sputnik and The National
Science Foundation became part of my world. PhD in mathematics in
1963 at Washington University in St. Louis: We became a family of
five (boy, girl, boy) and I learned more about being a TA. I learned
about mathematics, about departmental politics and about intellectual
elitism. Instructor at UC Berkeley, 1963-1965. At Berkeley I learned
about Viet Nam, civil disobedience and filthy speech. University
of New Mexico, 1965-1995. At UNM I learned about sex, drugs and
rock and roll. I learned how to get divorces, how to play a guitar,
how to write video plays and produce them, and how to get married
again…and again…and again. I am now learning how to
live alone in the mountains and love it. My first unpublished book
is a calculus book called “The
Calculus: An Opinion”. My first self published book is
“The Golden Years of Jess Martin” and can be found on
Amazon. My column in The Malakoff News can be found at

BChem, PhD in Chemistry '63
Began Graduate study at The University of Notre Dame in '58. Also
met Gail [nee Ashworth] in '58, married in '59. Received a Ph.D.
in Chemistry in '63. My working career has been rather unspectacular,
applying myself mostly as a journeyman Analytical Chemist. There
have been several relocations which found the family moving from
Mobil Oil in New Jersey [Home State] to Olin Chemical in Massachusetts.
I have recently retired from the Acushnet Company [Titleist Golf]
where I was the Analytical Manager in the Golf Ball Research Department.
By choice family always seemed to take precedent over my career.
Gail and I have three Children: Susan, Christopher & Melissa
[Special Needs]. Unfortunately, Gail has passed away leaving me
quite empty.

Degrees: RPI: B.Met.E (57); MIT: MS (60), ScD (61).
My professional career in material sciences began in 1961 at Tyco
Labs in Waltham, MA, a startup on Rt. 128, the precursor to Tyco
Corporation; I moved to San Antonio, TX in 1968 when I joined Chromalloy
American Corporation as technical director of the Turbine Support

Sequa Corporation (NYSE; SQA.A), and I was named to head the gas
turbine operations of the newly combined organization. Since then,
I’ve been elected to the Sequa board of directors, named vice
chairman, and, in January 2005, elected chief executive officer.
In May 2006, RPI’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering
honored me with the Fellows Award. My wife, Sandra, (Professor of
Biochemistry at University of Texas Medical Center, San Antonio),
and I split our time between New York and San Antonio. We have three

Applied Physics, '57. For many years I stayed mainly on the same
latitude as Troy, first East (Boston, PhD Harvard '64) then West
(Rochester, Xerox Research Labs, '66 to '83). In August '83 I headed
south to Blacksburg ("go Hokies"). The Xerox days were
during the golden age of industrial research, much appreciated in
retrospect (nobody realizes they're in a golden age until it's over.)
Spent sabbaticals in Haifa ('72) and London ('90 and '98). Became
emeritus prof. at Virginia Tech in '06. That means I'm off the payroll
and I no longer teach, but I continue to write (partly on research,
partly on a new book). My child-bride wife continues to work and
to teach at VT. We have two children and three grandchildren. |
