HIGHLIGHTS FROM RPI REUNION PERSONAL UPDATES

The following are some of the highlights found in the Class of '57 Personal Update Forms displayed in a book in the Student Union during the 50th Reunion. Apologies in advance for any highlights missed during review of the updates. The Class of '57 has had quite an adventure over the past 50 years.

 

Art Boniface : Community Service-Vermont Institute of Natural Science – bird handler
Edward Brewton – 30+ years USN. Commanding Officer USS Suribachi, USS Mars
James Bruno – co-founded two public IT Companies.
Paul Bush – Founder, former CEO, Bush Industries. Built business from 6 – 3500 people. NY State Entrepreneur of the year. Awarded Emmy as Executive Director of the film, Children of the Fourth World.
Charles Byrne – Author photo book, “ Lunar Orbiter Photographic Atlas of the Near Side of the Moon”
Neil Campbell – Supervisor, LA Olympic Organizing Committee – 1984
Will Castleman – National Academy of Sciences. 2007 RAA Award.
Jerry Cohen – President – Boston Patent Law Association
Walt Tkaczyk Dartland – elected District Attorney , 12th Judicial District, Michigan. Deputy Attorney General and Special Counsel, State of Florida.
William Delaney – 3 years on staff of Secretary of Defense.
John Doyle – Chairman- Newburgh Planning Board
Robert Elkin – Underwater Photography (scuba)
Stephen Falk – Mayor- Great Neck, NY
John Fisher – 20 years working with “I Have a Dream” Foundation assisting disadvantaged youth.
William Gardiner – served on Rensselaer’s Administration and Infrastructure Committee – 1990. Serve on the Board of Trustees at Emma Willard School since 1994.
Arthur Goldstein – Chairman/CEO Ionics, Incorporated. National Academy of Engineering. Rensselaer Entrepreneur of the Year – 1997.
Dave Goodrich – built and managed off-shore chemical plants in Puerto Rico.
Charles Gould – built a hydroelectric complex in Africa when 30 years old.
Harry Greenleaf – Member Board of Trustees – Ford Motor Company. In retirement, founded a charter schoool and advanced technology academy, now over 1000 students.
Doug Hasbrouck – 12 years on town planning board, 9 as chairman.
Reg Heitchue – CIA Intelligence Medal of Merit, Intelligence Community Seal Medallion.
Allan Herdt – Mission work in Ukraine with orphans, street children and adult drug rehabilitation. Repairing homes in Mississippi after Katrina.
Philip Hershberg – electrical engineer, air force officer, stock broker, research associate, physician, professor of Medicine at Harvard and Boston University, security analyst.
Mel Hirsch – Chairman/CEO U.S. Datatron, Inc.
Robert Jones – Retired VP, General Manager, James River Corporation
James Julian – Commercial Pilot’s License. Flight Instructor with over 3000 hours of experience.
James Keebler – 43 years member volunteer fire department (chief, most offices).
William King – Chairman, National Institute of Building Science 1989-91.
Hank Krieger – Fullbright Scholarship, U. of Manchester, England. NCAA Division 111 National Men’s Tennis Coach of the year 2 times. Chair of Faculty at Harvey Mudd.
Blair Lawson – Town treasurer, Morris County. Owned/cruised 37” sailboat in New England.
Harry Lindner – former member New York State Superfund Management Board.
Allan McEwan – former Town of Varrow Point, WA councilman.
Larry Palmer – Since 1997, teaching part time, Professional Master of Engineering Program at University of Maryland.
Allan Poms – Associate Partner at largest architectural firm in Miami, Florida. Chief Architect for City of Miami – 25 years.
Bertram Raphael – Senior Fulbright Lectureer, Vienna, 1973-74. Co-founder, Journal of Artificial Intelligence.
John Rau – Worked on a Peace Park in Uzbekestan in 1987. Sailed 3 months on a Russian Research Ship in 1988.
Glen Ryan – Deputy Chief of Staff (DCS) for Operations and the DCS Logistics of the Air Weather Service, USAF. Served 30 years I many assignments from Europe to Southeast Asia.
Raymond Schneider – Running 5 marathons for last 30 years.
Robert Scott - Built a 28 foot trimaran while in graduate school. Overhauled and lived aboard a 48 foot Bahamian ketch for eight years.
Herb Seymour - Started Xantech Corporation in 1969. Retird as Chairman and CEO in 1999.
Myron Shlatz – Member of Binghamton (NY) Symphony Chorus, Downtown Singers, SUNY Binghamton Chorus, Tri-Cities Opera and Lexington (KY) Singers.
Pickett Simpson – Received PhD in 1998 from RPI!
John Stopen – Member of NY State Electorial College for Jimmy Carter. “Arrived at RPI without knowing they had a hockey team – not having played in 3 years- and signing to play on the team – and ending up goalie – which I had never done.””Turned down invitation to play on 1960 Olympic team (which would have guaranteed their loss.”
Dan Udell – Science writer, Many photography exhibits including that held during the 1957 50th Class Reunion. In charge of press relations at first three Shuttle launches.
Richard Veltri – Five years town council. Four years Ct. State Legislator. 27 US patents.
Martin Weinstein – Founder, Tyco Laboratories. Vice Chairman and CEO.
